What is asthma?

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder that often begins in childhood. No one is sure what causes asthma but it can often run in families.

People with asthma have overly sensitive lungs and are susceptible to such triggers as pollen, cigarette smoke and dust. Asthma does not go away nor can it be cured.


The three characteristics of asthma are:

  • Inflammation
  • Bronchoconstriction
  • Excessive mucous

Asthma is sometimes classified as:

  1. Mild Intermittent
  2. Mild Persistent
  3. Moderate Persistent
  4. Severe Persistent

 

 

What triggers asthma

  • Cold/Flu
  • Cigarette Smoke
  • Pollen
  • Mold/Mildew
  • Dust Mites
  • Weather Changes
  • Exercise
  • Animal Dander
  • Strong Emotions
  • Odors/Chemicals

What are the symptoms of asthma?

  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest Tightness
  • Fatigue
