Forced Expiratory Volume 1 Second (FEV1)

  • Volume of air exhaled during the 1st second of the FVC maneuver.
  • Reduced with obstructive diseases.
  • Can be normal or high with restrictive diseases (i.e. pneumonia).

Forced Expiratory Volume 6 Seconds (FEV6)

  • Volume of air exhaled during the 1st 6 seconds of the FVC maneuver.
  • Sometime used in place of the FVC in cases where patients take longer than 12 seconds to complete exhalation.
   

FEV1/FEVC or FEV6

  • This is the ratio of the FEV1 or 6 to FVC.
  • 75%-80% normal.
  • When reduced in the presence of a reduced FEV1 indicates obstruction.
